The brown color comes from natural radiation that interacts with aluminum traces. This process occurs over a period of several million years, with longer time frames creating darker shades. Smoky quartz is known to be found in larger sizes plus it is a tough stone that does not break easily, making it a very popular precious stone that is used in jewelry making.
