WHAT IS LAPIS LAZULI? Lapis Lazuli is a rock primarily composed of (1) lazurite, which is a very complex blue mineral (2) calcite which is calcium carbonate, white in color and (3) pyrite which is iron sulfide, white-gold in color. Lapis Lazuli is a contact metamorphic rock.
WHY IT'S AWESOME? Throughout history, humans would make mighty treks up some of the highest mountains to retrieve this special stone of vibrant blue sought after as symbol of honor, royalty, power, spirit, the gods and of power. For more than 6000 years, this stone has be valued and traded in Afghanistan, Africa and Europe. In ancient times, it was considered a precious stone or gem.
And for the artist, the word 'lapis' is Persian for the color blue. Prior to 1828, this was used as a pigment for ultramarine paint, one of the oldest pigments that artists used. By the end of the Middle Ages, this brilliant blue solid with a slight red tinge was ground down and exported. It made a fine blue pigment that was valuable and expensive. Lapis Lazuli was made into beads, cabochons and carvings.
