Malachite is a semi-precious stone, often known as the Stone of Transformation. It has intense and powerful energy that makes it a popular choice for spiritual and protection rituals. The beautiful green banded patterns are created by the oxidization of copper when water is absent from the stone, and this is why it's often associated with growth and change. Malachite also resonates with the heart chakra, helping to open it and restore balance and harmony.
WHAT IS MALACHITE? Malachite is a softer mineral that rates a 3.5 to 4 on the hardness scale. Pieces that have more of a distinctive pattern will be higher in value. Malachite is a very unique-looking stone with a vivid emerald green color. Different shades of green swirl together with black to create a beautiful pattern over the stone’s surface. It’s a secondary mineral of copper and is formed when carbonated water comes into contact with copper minerals or when a copper solution combines with limestone.
WHY IT'S AWESOME? The word Malachite comes from the Greek word Moloche which means mallow, like the plant because it’s the same color as the mallow leaves. This gemstone has been used as a pigment for paints when crushed for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians made jewelry with Malachite in it, and they also used it to carve ornaments. It was mined as early as 4000 BC between Mt Sinai and the Suez. It’s even found in Egyptian hieroglyphs describing the stone to be part of their deities, and it was thought to protect against evil spirits. In Greece and Rome, they made vases and other items out of Malachite, and in Russia, it was used as a decorative architectural feature. Malachite is reputed to protect against the Evil Eye, witchcraft, and evil spirits, and was used by healers. It has a strong affinity with devic forces and Earth healing. In ancient times it was ground into a fine dust and mixed with galena,(which is a mineral form of lead) and mixed into a thick paste used to make kohl,(which was an ancient eye cosmetic). It was painted onto eyelids as a talisman to guard against evil. It is believed that this was a favorite of Cleopatra's and she was buried with a large vase of it to use in her afterlife. In Victorian times, small pieces of malachite dangled above the bed's of babies and children to keep evil away and ensure the child had a peaceful sleep.
