WHAT IS SEPTARIAN? Septarian, aka Dragon Stone, is a grey limestone rock with cracks and cavities that have been filled naturally with calcite, barite, aragonite, and other minerals. These cracks and cavities of this rock are named the “septaria”, which comes from the Latin word “septum”, which means “partition”. It has been debated that the Latin definition of “septum” means “seven”, but experts do not agree. The color of septarian usually includes white and yellows from calcite, and browns and blacks from other minerals.
WHY IT'S AWESOME? Love dragon lore? Septarian is your stone. Malagasy legend says that Septarian stones were fossilized remains of dragons. Even though this is only a legend, formation theories propose that volcanic activity killed sea life and left the remains on the sea bed. Chemical reactions occured between the sea floor and the killed sea life (dragons perhaps?) making mud balls that when the ocean receded, dried out, shrunk, and cracked into the beautiful patterns found in septarian rocks.
